The ultimate chewy sugar cookie recipe! I love these cookies!! They aren’t overly sweet, and they’re perfectly browned on the edges and still soft in the middle. I made these yesterday for my daughters Under The Sea themed birthday party. Because of the theme, I saw a great idea on Pinterest, and decided to add sliced almonds to the recipe to make sand dollar cookies. They came out so cute!

The best sugar cookie recipe!
Ingredients
- 2¾ cups all purpose flour
- ½ tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ⅛ tsp salt
- 1½ cups white sugar
- 2 sticks softened butter
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 3 Tbs buttermilk
- Sliced almonds if making sand dollar cookies, or colored sugar for decorating if making regular cookies.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- In a small bowl mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together your sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
- Add in your egg and vanilla.
- Slowly add in the dry ingredients. The dough will be very dry.
- Mix in the buttermilk.
- Roll dough into small balls... I make mine about the size of a small golf ball. Place dough onto an ungreased baking sheet. Lightly press down on the dough to barely flatten them. Sprinkle with sugar or sprinkles if using.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly golden on the edges. If you're making sand dollar cookies... immediately place your sliced almonds in a star pattern on the cookies. Gently press them into the cookie. Let cool on a cookie rack. Serve your cookies in a bed of brown sugar to look like sand! So cute!!

These are great cookies with a lovely flavor but not too sweet. My husband ate them all up so now I need to make more to share with friends and co-workers.
