Happy Cinco De Mayo! Ahhhhhh today is the day for perfect avocados, salty tortilla chips, cold margaritas, and lots of laughter with friends and family. Some people mistake today for being Mexico’s Independence Day…. but it’s not. It’s really a celebration to commemorate the Mexican army‘s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Today is usually seen as a day to celebrate being a Mexican American here in the states. A way to honor their culture and a sense of pride for being Mexican.
It’s a part of my culture that I don’t know much about to be honest. My grandfather was half Italian and half Mexican…… and one feisty, hot blooded, crazy character! lol He is the one person in my life that I would give anything to know as an adult. He passed away when I was only 8, so I never got to ask him to teach me all of the crazy stuff he knew. He was a professional gambler of all things! He even had his own airplane and airport!!! Isn’t that nuts???!! I never knew any of this growing up as a young girl…. and by the time I learned of it he was already gone. BUT today is the day that I celebrate being part Mexican and I celebrate my crazy grandfather! lol He loved good food, fast cars, beautiful women, and led an absolutely crazy life. The stories I’ve heard seriously remind me of a James Bond movie. 🙂 So to all of you…. have a great Cinco De Mayo and enjoy your loved ones and hopefully some amazing food too! Salud!
