BBQ Baked Cowboy Beans! I honestly don’t know if I can quite put into words just how flipping delicious these suckers are!! My good friend Kristin, who is also known for her fabulous blog, The Cookin’ Chicks, invited my family to attend a private BBQ hosted by her Real Estate broker @ Excel Real Estate Experts. They put on an insanely fun event at Lake Wilderness Park. They had carnival games, bounce houses, pony rides, Deano the clown, elephant ears, gelato and more…… including these BBQ Baked Cowboy Beans. As our seven children ran around on a cotton candy sugar high… Kristin and I couldn’t stop raving about how ah-may-zing these beans were!!! We both hands down agreed that they were the best beans we’ve ever had. That says a lot too….. since Kristin is from Texas 🙂 I even passed up on all the other food… and had to wait a couple hours… just to go back for seconds. They were THAT good. I asked Kristin if she thought she could get the recipe and the woman came through! Good job Kristin 🙂 This is Molly Mellick’s recipe for her “Cowboy Beans.” I tweaked it slightly by using ground turkey instead of beef. And I added more onion, as her recipe called for only 1/2 cup… and I love onion! Kristin brought the kids over for a “pot luck” lunch today just so we could make these beans. She brought her Delicious Potato Salad, and I made my Killer Cornbread to go with it. We were in heaven. I made these beans two ways today…. one in the slow cooker and one baked in the oven. They both came out perfect 🙂 Mr. Jones came home after work, devoured the left overs, and promptly stated that the guys at work would definitely love it if I were to send him to work with a batch.
- 1 pound ground turkey (original recipe called for beef)
- 1 medium sweet onion, chopped (original recipe called for ½ cup)
- ¼ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup barbecue sauce (I used sweet baby ray's)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 Tbs. molasses
- 1 Tbs. chili powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. pepper
- 2 Tbs. mustard
- 1 can pork 'n beans
- 1 can kidney beans, drained
- 1 can pinto beans, drained
- ½ pound bacon, cooked and crumbled
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large sauté pan, cook ground turkey (or beef) until browned, breaking up and stirring as it cooks. Add onion and cook until tender. Drain off any excess grease.
- In a large bowl, combine all the the ingredients, except the cooked bacon. Stir well.
- Pour into a 2 quart casserole dish or crockpot. Top with bacon.
- Bake for one hour, OR cook in slow cooker on HIGH for 1 hour, then reduce to LOW for 2-4 hours.

Dang… we don’t have any canned pork ‘n beans. Nor any cornbread mix for your cornbread recipe. Any suggestions on how to make those?

Hi Monique! If you don’t have canned pork ‘n beans you can definitely make your own 🙂 I would use a bean like great northern white beans or a pinto bean. I haven’t made these myself as canned is readily available where I live….. but here’s what I would do if they weren’t…
Ingredients:
4 cups dried navy, great northern or pinto beans
10-12 cups cold water
3 tsp salt
2 cups ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 Tbs. molasses
1 Tbs. mustard
3 cups water
1/2 pound bacon, sliced
Instructions:
Soak the dried beans in the cold water overnight.
Drain and place beans in slow cooker. Add enough hot water to cover the beans by an inch. Cover and cook on HIGH for 1 hour, or until tender.
Drain. Add the remaining ingredients into slow cooker, and stir. Cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or HIGH for 4-6 hours.
For the cornbread mix…. I found a recipe online, but have never tried it myself. It looks good though 🙂 http://busycooks.about.com/od/homemademixes/r/cornbreadmix.htm Hope this helps and you’re able to try the recipes!!
